Mise-en-scene
· Proxemics of the words when they fade away
connotes the separation in people when there is an unexpected event and that
people tend to go by themselves when there is a threat as we know that this
film is a horror. As people are less trustworthy around people when death or
pain comes into play.
·
grandfather clock has some significant in the
film as this could be showing us that they are running out of time or that they
are wasting time in the film so this could be leading up to a significant part
in the film or until something finally happens.
Editing
· Editing of the main title shows a flicking
effect that can represent a fire as its light source this could connote that
fire has some sort of play in the film as this is related to pain and as well
fire is red/orange which represents death and pain.
· The use of the ellipsis in the opening sequence
shows us that someone or something is looking for something in the house which
could be the location of the films setting and the opening sequence is speeding
up the process to get to the discovery which builds up tension because we don’t
know what it could be.
Camera
·
The close up of the picture of the family
portrait connotes to the audience that this family has some sort of connection
to the film meaning that they could be the victim of the film.
·
Zooming in on the old lady connotes danger and a
threat in the house that they are in because we don’t know why she is there so
this will create tension as this can relate to the audience and that we don’t
know why.
Sound
· The show of the incidental music throughout the
opening sequence to build a dark and gloomy atmosphere because it’s unexpected
so the viewer doesn’t know what to react like but when the title comes up with
the violins playing loud makes the viewer jump as its unexpected and you didn’t
expect it.
