audience presentation

This is the presentation that we have produced to show some other pupils in our media group. we have put together everything that we have thought and made and other ideas that we have thought of and put them into this presentation to see if we can get a better understanding of what we are making or ideas that we haven't thought of. the feedback that we got was very helpful. so the first question we got was how we were going to get away with using more realistic weapons in our film, our answer was that our filming location was more remote and quiet resulting in people not knowing that we were there however we were going to tell people before hand that we were going to be filming so that the authority doesn't get involved. another question was the sound that we were going to get as a lot of our camera shots were longer than most due to running scene, our respond was that we weren't going to have natural sound in our film but will just be more fast, upbeat music to build tension so therefore there would be any need for the sound problem.

the answers that we asked were- what do you think people will find appealing?
most pupils said that the use of realism and the gore of the film will attract a lot of people to the film for the sense of escapism and for entertainment. which has helped us decide what our film is for.
room for improvement?
we got that there needs to be more technical lighting to build up tension and that we need to make sure that its dark enough to see but light enough so that everything not given away.
name for the film?
most pupils said that they like the visions title as it ties in with the flash back and confusion of the film.

Uses of gratifications examples of film

The 4 main areas are-

Diversion- escape from everyday problems and routine.
personal relationships- using the media for emotional and other interaction.
personal identity- finding yourself reflected in texts, learning behaviour and values from texts.
surveillance- information which could be useful for living.

Bond films

Diversion- people will watch these films at night as an evening watch and when people watch these types of films they will be expecting the same crime and secret agent feel in the film because it makes people feel as if they are there with James bond so this film makes people feel as if they are good enough to do these sorts of things because they make it look easier than what it really is.

Personal relationships- People when watching these films will have a strong relationship for James Bond as he is the main character, the females who will be watching the film will have a more fantasy feeling for James, thinking about being with him in real life. whereas for males we sometimes feel jealous of him for being able to do the sorts of things he does and then compare it to out abilities.

Personal identity- when people are watching this this will see some resembles to their lives in the way that they act such as at a job everyone makes themselves look posh to make people look up to them instead of looking down at you so this will build confidence with that person. also the language that he uses is sophisticated which not many people speak like which could make people think what it would be like to be that way. making society a more positive and sophisticated place instead of being looked at like a un-education area.

Surveillance- the information that this brings to their audience is that you should think about how you act to other as their is always someone one step ahead. this will create a positive vibe to society as it will make more people interested in working for the authority to bring more peace to society instead of causing it making the film a sort of promotional aspect.`

Our product

Diversion- People who watch this type of film will be people who wants to have a fright/ terror moment in their everyday life. who like to see the unexpected events such as supernatural occurrence that you will probably never see in real life. so I well help me to escape and day dream about the film as when its playing the audience will be thinking about what they will be doing or when they are in a boring environment re-live that scene to what they would do to change the outcome of the films ending.

personal relationships- when people are watching this film they will have different emotions for the protagonist and the antagonist.May become to hate the antagonist characters or cause them to have feelings for the protagonist character. Because ours is going to be a horror thriller, this could cause the audience to get scared and be on edge.

personal identity- Audiences may relate to the protagonist due to the fact that they are being portrayed as always falling to the victim to other people, this connection may help the audience to express their own emotions and feelings.

Surveillance-Makes the audience feel more cautious of where they are going on their own and who they are meeting up with. Causes them to stop and think whether they are putting themselves in danger.

Brief history and examples

Uses and gratification theory

Audience expectations

Audience expectation
Horror thrillers tend to be very adrenaline rushing films and fast paced while also exploring horror films conventions such as fear of the unknown and supernatural beings, if the story allows for it.

You would expect the film to contain some thriller film conventions such as a stronger villainous force against a weaker protagonist, with the villain taking on a scarier role than a normal thriller villain, possibly being some sort of creature. Horror thrillers may also overlap in conventions with psychological thrillers, in the sense that conflict is raised through emotional and mental states with the added physical conflict.

In horror thrillers you would expect to see some sought of gore depending on the age rating this could include the torture of victims along with the regular thriller conventions.

Audience theories

Hypodermic needle theory
The hypodermic needle theory is an old theory of communication. This theory suggests to others that an audience of your product or media is helpless to the effect and messages of a medium. This theory also says that an audience will absorb all of the intended information from the media. With an effect of believing anything that they see.

Example:
The Nazi propaganda was to make sure that the Germans only saw media that would follow the view of Hitler’s and also tried to restrict other views from the country so that their people wouldn’t be influenced

Uses and gratification model
Blumler and Katz’s uses and gratification theory suggests that media users play an active role in choosing and using the media.  Users take an active part in the communication process and are goal oriented in their media use.  The theorist says that a media user seeks out a media source that best fulfils the needs of the user.  Uses and gratifications assume that the user has alternate choices to satisfy their need. There are different ways in which this theory takes place and the factors are; Diversion, personal relationships, personal identity, entertainment, surveillance.

Example:
A James bond film the diversion of this is that the person is with James bond the whole time trying to solve puzzle with him or cheer him on so you then forget your surroundings as you have escaped into the film.
Also with the film the entertainment is a main influence for the audience because they have time spare then they will need something to fill in that time which this film doesn’t as it is action packed and you get to feel what the characters are feeling the whole way through.

Reception theory
Reception Theories is when producers or directors construct a text encoded with hidden message or meaning that they want to get across to the audience. If done correctly the audience will be able to pick up the meaning or message straight away, but the audience will need to be reminded of the message throughout the film this could be done through character dialogue or actions within the film.

Example:
When watching a Simpson’s episode the mean aspect to the success of the product is through the use of comedy. So therefore there will be different views from different people such as a teen finding the program funny whereas old people may find it inappropriate or a joke.
In horror-thriller films the audience is expect to feel certain emotions that are related to horror and thriller films such as anticipation, terror, uncertainty, surprise and are able to create suspense.
